Free Film School

Learn how to make movies.

I haven't been on this blog much because I've been working on my Filmmaking 101 course. It's a 36 week introduction to movie making. The first ten weeks are up and running, and I'm working on getting the rest done.

But I have a problem: I don't know who wants to learn how to make movies. So, I'm passing this on to you to pass on to anyone you know who wants to learn how to shoot videos. If you have an aspiring filmmaking--or are one yourself--please check out my free film school and tell others as well.

Thanks!

  1. Question before I click over--what age is this aimed towards? Is it adaptable for my 11 year-old? This is his current passion, and there's only so much material out there for that age range (ie: none).

  2. Mary Grace, yes, the program is absolutely adaptable for an 11 year old. However, some of the extra content--which I discuss here--would probably be inappropriate. I've been kicking around this idea for a long time and I've worked hard to make it suitable for youth.

Also, I am hoping for some useful feedback so I can make my next program even more effective and useful for both the kids who are interested in making media and their parents.

The great news is that you can look at all the content I've got up already right now. The video lessons are a couple minutes long. This program is focused squarely on getting out there and producing media.

    Thanks!

  3. Cool! Bookmarking so that I can give a lookover before I let him in on it. :-) I'd be happy to let you know how it works for us ... and if it helps in my attempts to make him stop following me around with his flip for the "reality show" he's decided he's filming about us. Can you say "annoying"? LOL

  4. Luke, is there any way to "suspend" a subscription? I meant to ask this earlier, but my boy LOVED the first lesson ... and now he's in Nepal. He didn't get to finish filming for the second lesson, and will have two waiting for him when he gets back. I guess if it's not possible, it's no biggie, but I thought I'd ask.

I'm aspiring to shoot a film starring Amber Densmer.

    Unfortunately, I don't have a script, or a camera, or a Amber.

  6. Scripts are easy to come by. Cameras are a tad trickier, but many modern phones have them built in. And Amber? She's one of a kind, so you may have to settle for less.

  7. Mary Grace, unfortunately, no. Most (all?) auto-response tools are built to do just that: Automatically send messages on time. The one thing you could do--since you're still early in the process--is unsubscribe for the time being and resubscribe the week or so before you want to start up again. This, of course, would be far less practical if you were on, say, week 32.

If you get totally lost or out of sync with the course, remember you can always find links to every assignment here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AoA4BJBHUM7bdEFDMElTbHgtLVdaekp2dWlJTWVQMUE or by visiting the blog and clicking one of the Filmmaking 101 links.

    Hope that helps!

I tried signing up several times, but am not getting a confirmation email...I will try again in a day or two to see if issue has been fixed. Or, if you can look back at the registration log and assist me, that would be great!

    Thanks,
    Isabelle

  9. Isabelle, I'm not seeing you in the registration log at all, so something is definitely not working properly. I'm so sorry about that! If you could email productionnow@gmail.com with your name and email address, we'll get you manually added to the list and see if that works.

Again, I'm so sorry the form isn't working for you. It's really frustrating when technology doesn't work.
